Investing in Arcata: 16 Years of Measure G Success

     On November 4th, 2008, 63.49% of Arcata voters approved ballot initiative Measure G– supporting public infrastructure (streets) and public services through a 3/4 cent sales tax increase.

Measure G funding plays a vital role in advancing transportation upgrades, infrastructure rehabilitation, and public safety initiatives in the City of Arcata. Since its passage, Measure G has provided essential revenue that not only enabled the City to expand its paving and infrastructure efforts but also helped leverage additional financing for major capital projects.

Over the past 16 years, Measure G has been instrumental in driving progress. The City has invested approximately $18 million from Measure G into transportation-related improvements, supporting projects with a combined value of more than $30 million. These accomplishments would not have been possible without the critical support provided by Measure G.

As part of these road and infrastructure improvements, the City is committed to implementing the Complete Streets Policy adopted by the City Council on May 18, 2022. Complete Streets are designed and operated to ensure safe and accessible mobility for all users—regardless of age, ability, or mode of transportation. This includes drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transit riders, reflecting the City’s dedication to inclusive and sustainable transportation planning.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the City established the Transaction and Use Tax Oversight Committee (TUTOC) to monitor the management and use of Measure G funds. [More information is available here.]
