[ARCHIVED] International ShakeOut Day is Thursday, 10/19

This year’s International ShakeOut Day is Thursday, October 19th and the Great Shake Out Earthquake Drill is at 10:19 a.m.! It’s time to practice our earthquake drill skills!

DURING THE DRILL
1. At 10:19 a.m. the earthquake drill has begun.
     A. DROP to the ground and make yourself as small as possible.
     B. Cover your head and neck to protect it, and if possible, get underneath a sturdy table. If there is nothing nearby to take cover under, keep yourself as small as possible and stay put. Studies show that the further you move during an earthquake, the more likely you are to have something hit or fall on you.
     C. Hold on to a leg to remain under the protective surface during the shaking.
2. Remain in position for a minute. Once that time has passed the drill is over and you can stand up again.
3. Think about what you saw while you were taking cover – what potential hazards did you notice that could be secured before the event of an actual earthquake? Discuss your findings with others.
