The City of Arcata recently updated the open hours for the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Make sure to know the new times to not get locked behind the gate!
The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary provides recreation and nature viewing, coastal and marsh habitat and wastewater treatment through the Enhancement Marshes. The Arcata City Council recently adopted new overnight closure times for the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. The Marsh will be closed from one hour after sunset to sunrise. These hours will also be in effect at the Interpretive Center parking lot and South I St. The City may utilize the gate on South I St. to enable enforcement of the overnight hours restriction.
This past year the City has implemented several improvements along South I Street through the marsh with the intention of increasing both pedestrian and wildlife safety. The City is implementing the new overnight closure times in order to provide refuge for wildlife and reduce uses incompatible with the marsh’s sensitive habitat. The change in overnight closure hours and motorized vehicle access restrictions will not hinder emergency access or research access. The overnight use time restrictions are consistent with other public coastal access areas in the Humboldt Bay region such as Mad River Beach County Park and the Ma-le’l Dunes Unit of Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge.
