Planning Commission

Purpose


The Planning Commission's primary function is set by a statute in the California State Government Code Title 7 Sections 65000 - 67980: Planning and Land Use. Planning Commissioners:

  • Serve in an advisory capacity to the City Council on all matters pertaining to planning and the physical development of the City and surrounding areas.
  • Provide recommendations regarding preparation, adoption, amendments, administration, and implementation of the General Plan and the Arcata Land Use Code.
  • Make decisions with respect to Negative Declarations, Environmental Impact Reports, and other environmental documents.
The Planning Commission’s powers and duties are outlined in Arcata Municipal Code Sections 2208 to 2211.

Regular Meetings


Meetings must be held in an open-public session as set forth in the Ralph M Brown Act.  For the conduct of commission meetings, the Planning Commission follows Rosenberg's Rules of Order for parliamentary procedures. 

  • Meetings take place the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month
  • Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m.
  • Meetings are held at City Hall located at 736 F Street Arcata, CA 95521.
    • Please note that the City is following County and State guidelines closely, and that in-person attendance has been postponed. Details to participate or observe the meeting virtually are provided in each meeting agenda.

Members of the public can observe the meeting:

​How to Participate in the Meeting


Members of the public may attend the meeting in-person to give their comment, or before the meeting by sending an email to the assigned Planner identified in the Notices of Public Hearing. Emailed comments WILL NOT be read during the meeting, but will be forwarded to the City Council members and included in the written record of the meeting.
  • Please note that the City is following County and State guidelines closely, and that in-person attendance may need to be postponed with a return to virtual participation based on the latest guidance.

Conflict of Interest Provisions of the City of Arcata Conflict of Interest Code, AMC Title II, Chapter 8, apply to all commission members. Commissioners must file California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) Form 700 with the City Clerk's Office.
