During July 12 through July 18, 2010, officers handed out 105 gift certificates to children wearing helmets.  Arcata Police Chief Tom Chapman said, "Our goal was to promote safe riding practices, educate youth on safety equipment laws, and provide an opportunity for children to get to know some of our officers during a positive interaction." Due to the success of the program, the APD will again offer rewards to helmet wearing youth during the week of August 23rd (the first week of school).
