MAKE IT A MERRY SEASON FOR THE PLANET: REDUCE WASTE DURING THE HOLIDAYS
More than a million additional tons of waste is generated each year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. The City of Arcata’s Environmental Services Department wants to help you make this holiday season merry for the earth as well as for loved ones.
The holidays are a wonderful time to share. Take the opportunity to donate unneeded household items and toys to thrift stores or charities. And consider shopping at thrift stores to find unique gifts and usable gift containers. Reusable gift bags and baskets are a great replacement for wrapping paper, and ecards and enewsletters save on postage and waste paper. For a great, paperless gift, consider buying carbon offsets at www.TerraPass.com/shop/Arcata. For just $13.12 per metric ton, you can offset your loved one’s holiday travel and help grow large, old trees in the Arcata Community Forest’s Jacoby Creek/Barnum Tract.
Thirteen percent of landfill waste is food. When throwing a party, be kind to everyone’s waistlines and the landfill by serving smaller portions. Most food waste can be composted as long as it is not meat, bones or fat, instead of going to a dumpsite where it creates methane and carbon dioxide greenhouse gases.
And don’t forget to recycle your Christmas tree at Wes Green Landscape Materials at 6360 West End Road in Arcata.
