City of Arcata Recreation Division Thanks the U.S. Coast Guard Group/Air Station Humboldt Bay
The City of Arcata thanks Lt. Keith Roberts, Lt. Daryl Reed, Lt. Stanley Robinson, AET Neal Stremel, AET3 Jeewoong Hur and the members of the U.S. Coast Guard/Air Station Humboldt Bay for their generous participation in this summer’s Adventure Camp. MH-65 Short Range Recovery Helicopter crewmembers delighted Adventure Camp participants this summer with a unique opportunity to practice evacuation skills. Adventure Camp, which is facilitated through a partnership with North Coast Adventure Centers, takes place at the Arcata Ropes Course in Redwood Park. The camp serves ten to 14 year olds and was held during five weeks this summer. Adventure Camp included skill development in shelter building, knots, climbing and rappelling, water rescue, hiking, track identification, compasses, maps, GPS, fire building, camp safety, backpacking, first aid and evacuation. During this exercise Adventure Camp participants flagged down the Coast Guard MH-65 and prepared an S.O.S. for the hovering helicopter and crew. This was an exceptional experience that will not soon be forgotten. One camper exclaimed, “The Coast Guard flyover was the best part of this camp!” For more information on up-coming Fall Adventure Ropes Course / Canopy Tour opportunities for all ages contact the Arcata Recreation Division office at (707) 822-7091 or visit our website at www.cityofarcata.org/rec.
