Boards of Permit and Handicapped Appeals
The Boards of Permit Appeals was established in 1966 by the adoption of Ordinance No. 586 and the Board of Handicapped appeals in 1993 by the adoption of Ordinance 1204. Both were amended in 1999 by Ordinance 1292. The Boards primary function is to hear and act upon appeals and decisions made by the Building Official. The Board of Permit & Handicapped Appeals has powers and duties are outlined in Arcata Municipal Code sections 2223 – 2230.

The Board of Permit Appeals consists of six members, two experienced in building construction and one member is a public member. The Handicapped Access Appeals Board consist of six members as follows: two experienced in is be a public member and appointed by the Board of Permit Appeals from among its members except that in the event there is no public member on the Board of Permit Appeals, such member is appointed by the Council; two members are physically handicapped persons appointed by the Council.
