Special Events

The Special Events Permitting Process assists local agencies and non-profits in providing community events in Arcata. The Recreation Division acts as the liaison between the event organizer and all other city departments.

City of Arcata Special Event Applications

There are two types of permitting packets, one for “Major Events” and one for “Minor Events”.

Major Special Events are classified as events drawing more than 50 people total or events that close a City street. A non-refundable application-processing fee of $150 must accompany the application.

Minor Events are classified, as events drawing 50 people or less that do not close any streets. A non-refundable application-processing fee of $100 must accompany the application.

Included in each application packet is:

Major Event Application: (12 pgs.) Cover Sheet, Permit Application page, Requests Checklist, Rules and Regulations, Large Event Recycling and Waste Diversion Requirements, Waste Diversion Plan, Waste Diversion Tracking Form, Insurance Requirements page, Fee page, Blank Plaza Map, Blank Street Grid, ABC Permit info. As of 2008, all Major Event holders must either be a non-profit or be co-sponsored by a non-profit agency. Documentation of non-profit status must be submitted.

Minor Event Application: (7 pgs.) Cover Sheet, Permit Application page, Rules and Regulations, Insurance Requirements, Blank Plaza map, Blank Street Grid and ABC Permit Info.

Timeline

Major Event:  Must be submitted at least 30 days (60 days for events over 1000 participants) in advance of event date.
Minor Event:  Must be submitted at least 30 days in advance of event date.

Application for Business License for Booth Sales

Any person or organization, including a non-profit organization, who is selling food or merchandise at a special event must have a one day booth permit. Information only booths do not need a booth permit.
