2014 Arcata Bicycle Boulevard Project


The project involved installation of bicycle boulevards striping and signs, sidewalk infill, traffic control and minor electrical work. For more information about the project, visit the City's ABB webpage.

The Arcata City Council awarded this contract to Mercer-Fraser Company at its October 1, 2014, regular meeting.

Foster Ave Extension Project

Project involves constructing new roadway running from the Alliance Road/Foster Avenue intersection to the Jay Street/Sunset Avenue intersection (site of a future roundabout) approximately 2,000 feet to the northwest. This will be one of Arcata's truck routes and will provide more direct connectivity between Highway 101 and Arcata's northwestern neighborhoods. The project includes a bicycle/pedestrian path parallel to the road's entire length.

GHD won the contract to draft engineering plans at the March 6, 2013 City Council meeting. The construction contract was awarded to Mercer-Fraser Company at the March 4, 2015 City Council meeting.

Work began Monday, April 20, and will continue on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, October 9, 2015.

Rails with Trails Project

Project involves construction of a Class 1, ADA-accessible, non-motorized, multiuse, paved trail through the city that is completely separated from streets and highways. The trail will run from Shay Park in north Arcata through the City to just north of State Route 255 (Samoa Boulevard), along rails within City rights of way, L Street and Alliance Road.

The Arcata City Council awarded this contract to McCullough Construction, Inc., at its January 21, 2015, regular meeting.

Work began Wednesday, April 15, and will continue on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, October 9, 2015.

Low Impact Development

7th and G Street Parking Lot

Various drainage and concrete improvements at 16th and L Streets and at the Seventh and G Street parking lot. Work will include the removal of existing asphalt and concrete pavement, placement/construction of concrete curbs and gutters, sidewalk and driveway apron, concrete pavement, permeable pavements, storm drain piping and inlets, street lighting, signage, landscaping, road striping, etc.

The parking lot will remain closed during construction. 

Project contract was awarded to RAO Construction at the January 7, 2015, City Council meeting.


Construction began Monday, April 6, 2015, and is expected to be complete by Friday, June 5, 2015.

Rotary Park Reconstruction Project

The Rotary Park renovation includes various concrete and fencing improvements at the park, which is located on South G Street.

The Rotary Club of Arcata Noon and Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise have been involved with Rotary Park since its initial development and have done annual work and cleanup days at the park for many years. Realizing the importance of providing residents, especially children, access to basic recreation amenities and safe play, both Clubs became involved with the planning of this park. and have donated $11,500 to help with the development and equipment costs for this reconstruction project.

Project contract was awarded to RAO Construction at the November 5, 2014, City Council meeting.

Active, nearing completion.

Upper Panorama Tank Replacement Project

Construction of a 225,000-gallon welded steel water tank, Water Tank #9, on Upper Panorama Drive. The project includes excavation and grading of tank site, installation of tank foundation, installation of the new tank with accessories installation of new yard piping and ties to existing piping, installation of new security fencing and access facilities at the tank site, installation of coating system for the new tank, disinfection of the new tank, demolition, removal and/or salvage of existing wooden water storage tank, yard piping, electrical and appurtenances, and revegetation and restoration of the areas associated with project construction.

The Arcata City Council awarded this construction contract to Resource Development Company at its May 5, 2015, special meeting.

Power Pole Replacement on Samoa Boulevard

Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG & E) will be installing new wood power poles and replacing an existing conductor as part of the repair from damage in the 2008 storm. Helicopters will be used for the moving of poles at some point during the project. 

Work is taking place near Samoa Blvd, just east of Highway 101, adjacent to the CHP offices to south and the southern edge of the community park to the north.



Work has been delayed until next year.
