2014 Roadway Grind and Inlay

Asphalt work

The City of Arcata Public Works Department is working in conjunction with RAO Construction to perform street asphalt grinding and inlay work in several areas along 10th Street and I Street next week.

I Street, between the 13th Street intersection and 14th Street, and from 7th Street to Samoa Boulevard, will be closed to through traffic on Wednesday and Thursday, September 24 and 25, 2014, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for street grinding and asphalt paving inlay work. Some paving work may extend past September 25.

Tenth Street, between I and J Streets, and from the N Street intersection to L Street, will be closed to through traffic on Wednesday and Thursday, September 24 and 25, 2014, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for street grinding and asphalt paving inlay work. Some paving work will extend past September 25.

No street parking will be allowed in these areas while the work is in progress. Access to private driveways will be limited.

While business driveways access will be impacted, the City and RAO Construction will work to get business traffic in and out of driveways as quickly as possible. Emergency access to all addresses will be maintained at all times.

The City thanks everyone for their patience as they continue to improve the streets.

Sewer Manholes & Mainline Repairs Project


Sanitary sewer collection improvements in Arcata. The work consists of, but is not limited to installing 16 sewer manholes and repairing 15 broken sewer mains in the City of Arcata.  Manholes will be installed at:

  1. 5th and F Streets
  2. 5th and G Streets
  3. 6th Street between G and H Streets
  4. 11th and G Streets
  5. 12th and G Streets
  6. 15th and G Streets
  7. 10th and J Streets
  8. 13th and H Streets
  9. 13th Street between H and I Streets
  10. 15th Street between H and I Streets
  11. 13th and G Streets, and
  12. 12th and J  Streets.

The Arcata City Council awarded this contract to V & C Construction, Inc. at its August 20, 2014 regular meeting.

Work begins September 29, 2014. Anticipated end date is Friday, October 31, 2014.

Fickle Hill Road
Improvements Project

Fickle Hill

Installation of radar feedback signs, guard rails, striping, sidewalk infills, traffic control, minor electrical work, stormwater pollution prevention plan, and other related construction operations on parts of Fickle Hill Road.

The City Council awarded this contract to RAO Construction at its June 18, 2014 regular meeting.

Work in progress. 

8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Work is expected to continue through the beginning of October, 2014.

Aldergrove Road Water System Upgrade

Water Valve

The City of Arcata and the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District began a water system upgrade project during the week of February 17, 2014 on Aldergrove Road near Ericson Way. Water line intertie work will be performed in October and November on the road and along the roadside.

Hilfiker Water Main Replacement Project

This project includes the installation of new water mains, valves, hydrant connections, blow-offs and main line connections, on Hilfiker Drive.

Construction is underway, occurring from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Anticipated end date is Friday, September 26, 2014.

The City Council awarded this contract to V & C Construction at its July 23, 2014 regular meeting.

Work in progress. Anticipated end date is Friday, September 26, 2014.

Union Street by Samoa Roundabout Sidewalk Work

RAO Construction will construct and improve about 400 linear feet of sidewalk and driveway on Union Street by the Samoa Roundabout as part of a private apartment complex construction project. There will be no parking in the construction zones and traffic will be redirected during work hours. Begins Monday, September 22, 2014.

PG & E Hydrostatic Pressure Testing


Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG & E) will be performing a hydrostatic pressure test on a natural gas pipeline in Arcata. This is part of a system-wide program to ensure the safety of the transmission pipelines that deliver gas across the region. Testing will occur from Myrtle Avenue near the Ryan Slough Reg Station in Eureka, to the Arcata Reg Station on the corner of 7th Street and L Street in Arcata.

7th and G Street Parking Lot

Low impact development retrofit of this downtown public parking lot to manage rainfall and minimize standing water. Site regrading, permeable pavement, bioswales and native vegetation rain gardens will infiltrate, filter, store, evaporate and detain parking lot runoff.

The Arcata City Council awarded this contract to GHD, Inc. at its April 16, 2014 regular meeting.

Foster Avenue Extension

Foster Avenue Extension Project

Construction of new roadway from the Alliance Road/Foster Avenue intersection to the Jay Street/Sunset Avenue intersection (site of a future roundabout) approximately 2,000 feet to the northwest. This will be one of Arcata's truck routes and will provide more direct connectivity between Highway 101 and Arcata's northwestern neighborhoods. The project includes a bicycle/pedestrian path parallel to the road's entire length. GHD won the contract to draft engineering plans at the March 6, 2013 City Council meeting.
